Women urged to get out of sumo ring amid emergency
Women trying to provide emergency treatment to a person who collapsed in a sumo ring were urged to leave it during a sumo event. The Japan Sumo Association later said the appeal was inappropriate in the life-threatening situation.
According to the association, Maizuru City Mayor Ryozo Tatami suddenly collapsed while making a speech in the ring on Wednesday. The association was holding the event at a gym in Kyoto Prefecture.
Several women entered the ring and took part in life-saving efforts. But a referee repeatedly announced that they should get out of the ring.
Professional sumo has the tradition of keeping women out of rings.
City officials said the mayor was taken to a hospital, and his life is not in danger.
Association Chairman Hakkaku issued a statement. He said he greatly appreciates the women's efforts and offers a deep apology for the inappropriate response.
☆Incredible! ”repeatedly announced that they should get out of the ring”? Was that the only reason why the life-savers were women?
☆Was your own tradition important even in the case of life-and-death emergency?
☆The Japan Sumo Association should reconsider on your value in society as a Public Interest Corporation.
