Top 10 books of 2014: a holiday reading list

The holidays are upon us in earnest. Presumably, now that the shopping rush is puttering out and the more pro-worker (re: union) jobs are letting employees go home for Christmas, one might want to spend time with family, relax, and enjoy the great indoors with chestnuts, eggnog, and other yuletide traditions. It's an ideal time to put down the smartphone or iPad and curl up with a good book.

To that end, here is a list of what I thought were the top 10 books of 2014. Whether you're the paperback type or more likely to view an ebook, I suggest you check these out!

Orfeo

Richard Powers, Science Fiction

This was a strange and interesting novel. It features a retired composer named Peter Els, who becomes an avant garde artist - one who pushes the boundaries in terms of what can be considered art, dabbling in dangerous do-it-yourself genetic engineering. What seems to be a study on the nature of art abruptly turns into an action narrative when government agents descend upon Els, forcing him to flee. A cross-country chase ensues, and throughout, we learn through flashbacks more about Els, including his early life, motivations, and personal drama. In some ways it seems to be, in part, a modern re-interpretation of the Greek tale Metamorphoses (the story of Pygmalion and the ivory statue), though there are also messages about terrorism and civil liberties. It's a deep thinker's book, for sure, but readers looking for something fun should enjoy it, as well.

Did you ever read a book review and realize that you have to get your hands on a title you've never heard of? That happened to me years ago, when I read a review in "The Wall Street Journal" of "The Gold Bug Variations," a new novel by Richard Powers. In one sense, the plot was a love story about two different couples. It was also about many other things, including the intricacies of the genetic code, and composer Johann Sebastian Bach's "Goldberg Variations."  Powers immediately became one of my favorite writers.

夫婦のどちらかによって国外に連れ出された子どもの扱いを定める「ハーグ条約」に基づき、英国の裁判所が、同国に滞在している日本人の母親に対して、子どもを日本に帰国させるよう命じていたことが関係者への取材で分かった。

返還命令が出たのは東京都に住んでいた日本人の夫婦の子。夫婦は昨年から別居し、母親が今年３月末、仕事の都合で渡英した際に子供を連れて行った。

Hurohuki radishes on the day




☆Hurohuki（風呂吹き）means well-boiled radishes, eaten with fragrant Yuzu miso（柚子味噌）. As its ingredient, Gensuke daikon radish（源助大根）in this region is a must. Good-tasting! especially in this season.

☆He, our second son, is a high-school student but is already a connoisseur of regional Kaga cuisine（加賀料理）.

☆Winter is approaching, and it is getting colder day by day. It's the season for Nabe cuisine, or one-pot dish cooked at the table in Japan. Good-tasting and smiling!

Responding to a recent radio interview of NPR, Richard Powers, one of my favorite American novelists, said on describing pieces of music that don't actually exist as follows:

"My challenge as a writer was how to create descriptions not just of canonical 20th century pieces, but to create vivid descriptions of fictional pieces. Works for small ensemble, for voice, symphonic orchestra, operatic works that did not exist and yet describe them in a way that was vivid and compelling and re-created the internal drama of the composer as he was at work on them. So it was almost as if I had in my own head to write the music first and then produce a kind of prose that recaptured the music and the rhythm and the challenge and the transgression of these pieces."
