Impressive Words

「私の人生で最も辛かったことは、２２歳の時に２年近くにわたり強制収容所に入れられたことです。楽器はおろか楽譜も見ることは許されませんでした。 けれども、私の心にはいつも様々な音楽が流れていました。なかでも、その多くを占めていたのがバッハの曲です。つらい生活を強いられていた私にとって、バッハが生み出した美しい調べは、とても大きな支えとなりました。」

Mischa Maisky, one of my favorite cellists, once said in a TV program,

“I was kept in a concentration camp for nearly two years from 22 years old, which was the hardest time in my life. I was not only allowed to play a musical instrument, but to see a sheet music. But various kinds of music were always floating in my heart. Most of them were pieces of Bach. The beautiful melodies by him were huge support for me, being forced into the hard life.”
